Directions for Entries

Please complete one (1) entry form for each quilt.  Maximum of three (3) quilts per person.  Each entry MUST have two identical color digital or traditional photos (4" x 6") attached to the upper right-hand corner of the form with the entrant’s name and address written on the back of each.

Entry Form Due Date: May 4, 2022

Quilt Drop off Date:  Wednesday, July 20, 2022, between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Quilt Pick up Date: Sunday, July 24, 2022 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Quilt Drop off Place: New Braunfels Civic Center

Quilt Show Categories

100 Theme
Must relate to the festival theme, “America: A Patchwork Quilt”.  Quilt will be judged as in all other judged categories.  Any size, construction technique, and quilting method is acceptable.  This quilt may be made by more than one person.
 
200 First Entry Quilt
Must be the first quilted project entered into a judged festival.  Any size, construction, and quilting method is acceptable.  The quilt top must be completely entirely by entrant; however, quilting may be done by another person.
 
300-500 Machine-Pieced & Quilted
Must be constructed (pieced and quilted) at least 95% by machine using patterns and inspiration from existing quilt history and/or expanding on patterns to create altered designs.  This quilt may not be made by more than two people including quilter.
          300 – Large must measure at least 91” but not more than 120” on any side
          400 – Medium must measure at least 55” but not more than 90” on any side
          500 – Small must not measure more than 54” on any side
 
600-700 Hand-Quilted
Must be entirely hand-quilted.  Any size is acceptable.  May not be made by more than two people including the quilter.
          600 – Hand-pieced and hand-quilted
          700 – Machine-pieced and hand-quilted
 
800–1000 Applique
Must be 70% or more appliqued (either hand-stitched or otherwise applied to the surface of another fabric).  May be either hand or machine quilted.  May not be made by more than two people including the quilter.
          800 – Hand Applique (created entirely by hand)
          900 – Hand-Guided Machine Applique (created using hand-guided machine)
          1000 – Computer-Guided Machine Applique (created and produced by a design program)
 
1100-1200 Embroidered
Must display at least 70% or more embroidery work.  Some piecing and applique is acceptable.  Any size, construction, and quilting method is acceptable.  May not be made by more than two people including the quilter.
          1100 – Hand embroidered
          1200 – Machine embroidered
 
1300 Miniature
Must be no more than 24” on any side.  Any construction, design, and quilting method is acceptable.  All aspects of the quilt must be in proportion to full-size quilts.  This quilt may not be made by more than two people including quilter.

1400 Art Quilts
Must be an original design made with artistic intent that utilizes color, design, and construction techniques that create a work that expands beyond the traditional quilt format.  Quilts will be judged based on creative design and artistic expression.  Workmanship is important, but design will carry more weight.  These creations may include embellishments (buttons, beads, embroidery, hot-fixed crystals, yarn, trim, ribbon, yo-yo’s, and all types of thread work).  Any size, construction, and quilting method is acceptable.  May not be made by more than two people including the quilter.  This category includes:  fiber art, wearable art, crazy quilt, and home décor.
 
1500 Mixed Technique
Must have design elements that do not fit into other defined categories.  May include embroidery, cathedral windows, redwork, wholecloth, home décor, holiday-themed, and other design elements.  Any size, construction, and quilting method is acceptable.  May not be made by more than two people including the quilter.
 
1600 Kits and Block-of-the-Month
Must be made from a kit (defined as a purchased pattern with pre-selected fabrics) that was purchased from a shop, catalog, or magazine.  This includes pre-printed whole cloth quilts.  Any size, construction, and quilting method is acceptable.
 
1700 Modern
Modern quilts take a novel approach to traditional quilting, including any of the following asymmetry, simplicity and minimalism, reinterpretation of traditional blocks, alternative block structures, increased negative space, and improvisational piecing.  Any size, construction, and quilting method is acceptable.
 
1800 Group Quilts (including Block Exchanges)
This category is for groups of quilters who have worked together to create a quilt of any size, construction, and quilting method.  A “group” is defined as three (3) or more persons, including the quilter.  Kits and Block-of-the-Month constructions are not allowed in this category.
 
1900 Miscellaneous
This category includes purses, totes, bags, wearables, table runners, table toppers, chairs, foot stools, placemats, scarves, Christmas tree skirts, decorative pillows, wall art, etc.
 
2000 Quilts Made by Seniors
Must be made by an entrant 65 years or older.  Any size, construction, or quilting is acceptable.  Any technique is acceptable.  May not be made by more than 2 people including the quilter.
 
2100 Exhibit Quilts
Non-judged category. Any size, construction, and quilting method is acceptable.  Construction year does not apply.

Quilt Preparation Guidelines

Identification of Entries
  • Each entry must have a fabric identification label with the maker’s name sewn to the back of the quilt or to the inside of the garment.
  • Prior to judging, labels must be covered with BLUE PAINTER'S TAPE.
 
Condition of Entries
  • All entries must be clean and in good condition.
  • No unfinished entries will be accepted.
  • QuiltFest will do its best to ensure quilts are handled with the best care; however, quilts are not insured by QuiltFest.  If this is a concern, please have quilts insured before submission.
 
Limitations for Entries
  • No quilt may exceed 120” across the top.
  • Submissions are limited to three per maker.
  • Quilts who are not members of NBAQG will be charged $35 per entry.
 
Sleeves for Hanging
  • Entries without a sleeve will be refused.
  • See sleeve directions for more information on how to create them.
  • Quilts longer than 90" must have the sleeve placed 90" from the BOTTOM of the quilt to avoid having quilts on the floor (the top will be folded back over at the top).
  • QuiltFest will not be responsible for poor display of quilts caused by loose stitches on sleeve pocket ends.
 
Wearable Arts Garments
  • Must be submitted on hangers.
  • Mark the hanger with your name if you want it returned.
  • All other entries will be enclosed in a plastic bag provided by the festival.
 
Fiber Arts Entries
  • Must be ready for installation with an appropriate hanging rod or device.
  • Maker is responsible for his or her own display on the festival floor.

AWARDS

First, second, third place and honorable mention awards will be given in each eligible category at the judges’ discretion.  Judges may decide not to give all awards in each category if they feel that the entries do not warrant such awards.
 
One set of awards will be available for all categories.  Ribbons will be awarded only to the entrant, but quilters will be acknowledged on the gallery cards and in the program.
 
Special awards include:  Best of Festival, Judges’ Choice, Viewers’ Choice, Best Theme Quilt, Best Hand Quilting, and Best Machine Quilting.
